Cisco's extensive job cuts set to impact hundreds of tech professionals in the Bay Area.

 

Cisco Systems is gearing up for a workforce reduction in the South Bay slated for the upcoming month, contributing to the ever-growing roster of tech companies embarking on substantial layoffs throughout the Bay Area. As per official documents obtained from the California Employment Development Department, Cisco intends to trim its workforce by 227 positions in San Jose and 123 positions in Milpitas, with the cut-off date set for October 16, 2023.

Interestingly, these 350 employees were initially apprised of the impending layoffs on July 17, 2023, with the flexibility to opt for either August 31 or the aforementioned October 16 as their final day of employment. It is worth noting that despite the notifications being disseminated in July, the formal layoff notices only made their way to the EDD on a recent Tuesday. The repercussions of this decision were felt most acutely at the Milpitas facility, nestled at 560 McCarthy Blvd., where nearly 50 positions were excised, and at the San Jose establishment located at 170 West Tasman Drive, where approximately 70 positions bore the brunt. Notably, a substantial chunk of these layoffs across both South Bay sites was concentrated within the realm of software engineering, as elucidated in the WARN notice.

This latest development comes on the heels of Cisco's prior round of layoffs earlier this year, which translated into the elimination of nearly 700 jobs across the Bay Area, including 70 positions at its San Francisco outpost, a move attributed to "business restructuring," as previously detailed by SFGATE. Cisco had previously signaled its intention to pare down its global workforce by 4,000 employees in a November 2022 EDD notice.

Adding another layer to this unfolding trend, Google also made headlines with its own round of layoffs this week. Among other prominent instances of mass layoffs recently in the Bay Area are those observed at Intel, Wish, and LinkedIn.
